About
About HyreADU
A research and planning site for homeowners considering an accessory dwelling unit — and a clear account of what we are not. Every cost figure, statute and permit record here carries its source and the date it was retrieved, because ADU information online routinely states one city’s rule as though it applied everywhere.
Why this exists
ADU information online has a specific failure mode. A rule that applies in one California city is written up as though it applied everywhere; a national average cost is multiplied by a regional index and presented as a local price; and a statute that was renumbered two years ago is still quoted under its old section.
Each of those is confidently wrong in a way that costs homeowners money and time. HyreADU exists to publish the version with the jurisdiction, the section and the date attached — including where that means publishing less.
What we publish
- Original research — analysis of California ordinance and permit records, with method and limits stated.
- Sourced statistics — figures with their year, geography, definition and source.
- Twelve calculators — each running on figures you supply or look up, never on a number we invented.
- Planning guidance across types, cost, permits, regulations, financing and construction.
How we handle local variation
ADU law is a state floor with local rules on top. We cite the statute for the floor and the jurisdiction’s own code for the rest, and where we have not recorded a jurisdiction we say so rather than showing you the state default with a city name attached. A floor is not an answer.
Our corpus today is heavily Californian, because that is where the record is richest and most accessible. We label it as such rather than implying national coverage we do not have.
What we are not
HyreADU is not an ADU builder, designer, engineer, lender, appraiser, insurer or property manager. We do not design, permit, build, finance or let ADUs, and we do not supervise anyone who does. Nothing on this site is legal, financial, tax or engineering advice.
Commercial relationships
The site earns no revenue today. We expect to earn it in future by introducing homeowners to ADU professionals; homeowners will not be charged. No professional has input into what we publish.
How it works sets this out in full and how we intend to vet covers what such a check could and could not establish.
Editorial standards and corrections
Every figure carries a source and a retrieval date. A last-reviewed date changes only when the content changes — we do not bump dates to look fresh. If you find an error, tell us; we will correct it and record what changed. See our editorial policy and research methodology.

Common questions about us
- Does HyreADU build ADUs?
- No. We publish research and pass homeowner inquiries to professionals. We do not design, permit, build, finance, appraise or let ADUs, and we do not supervise anyone who does.
- Is HyreADU free for homeowners?
- Yes. The research and the tools cost nothing, and homeowners will not be charged when introductions begin. The site earns no revenue today; we expect to earn it in future from professional introductions.
- Why is so much of the research about California?
- Because that is where the ADU record is richest and most accessible — statewide legislation plus jurisdiction permit data that is actually published. We label it as Californian rather than implying national coverage we do not have.
